Environment Bonaire has a long history of marine conservation. Starting with the conservation of turtles in 1961, the ban on spearfishing in 1971, and protection for coral, dead or alive, in 1975. The driving forces behind the creation of a Marine Park on Bonaire included Bonaire devotees Captain Don Stewart and the late Carel Steensma and the National Parks Foundation of the Netherlands Antilles. The Bonaire National Marine Park was established in 1979. The Marine Park encompasses all waters around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire, from the high tide mark to a depth of 60 meters. This is an area of approximately 27 km² (6672 acres) and includes coral reef, sea grass and mangroves. Lac and Klein Bonaire are both a RAMSAR site and therefore internationally recognized as important wetlands areas. As a demonstration site of the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN), the Marine Park is a model of its kind in the Caribbean, protecting and caring for the marine environment while maximizing safe levels for recreation and commercial use. The Marine Park maintains more than 100 public moorings, conducts scientific research, provides information to users, monitors human and natural impacts, and enforces the parks' laws and regulations. Recently, biologists discovered that Oxybenzone contributes to bleaching, has a detrimental effect on DNA and interferes with reproduction and growth. < Back to Sustainability Waste separation To keep the landfill (garbage dump) as separate as possible, the waste starts separating with us. We separate the waste into CAN, GLASS, PAPER / CARDBOARD, PLASTIC and RESIDUAL WASTE . For this we have created a small recycling center at the entrance.

< Back to Sustainability Water reuse Water on Bonaire is made from sea water, which is an expensive process. Not only for this reason, we reuse our water as much as possible, but also to have as little waste as possible run directly into the ground. We collect the rainwater through our roofs and this ends up in a large collection container of 15 m3. We use this rainwater to refill the swimming pool or to pump it to the drip system for the plants. The flushing water from the swimming pool is also collected in the drip system. The waste water from 2 of the 4 bathrooms (shower and sink) and 3 of the 4 kitchens goes directly to the drip system. The water from the rinse bins also goes directly to the drip system (blue arrow). The red arrow is the suction pipe of the drip system. In this way we try to save as much water as possible.

The rate on confirmation/invoice is binding. Solar-energy Villa Carina Apartments has 3 large solar panels with a total of 900 watts. The energy generated with this is stored in AGM batteries, these batteries last on average (with good use) 10 years. The stored energy (3 KWh) is used to supply the patio lighting and fans outside with electricity, as well as our billboard and the lighting at the sliding gate. This also has the advantage that there is always light in the event of a power failure. 98% of our lighting is LED, the garden lighting is 90% solar powered, but all LED. We also use economical devices to burden the power grid as little as possible and we dry our laundry in the sun. Bonaire is taking steps to switch to green energy. There are also 2 large shopping bags to avoid having to use the disposable bags at the supermarkets. Every kitchen has normal cutlery so no plastic disposable forks, spoons and knives. There are also trays available to avoid having to use cling film or plastic bags to store food.
